THE CAMOUFLAGE RESIDENCE

The clients for this home approached me with this incredible plot at the edge of nature as their opportunity to fulfill their residential dreams. Their wishes deviated from the conventional checklist, which only made the challenge more exciting for me! Several apparent contradictions came together in their wish list and were accommodated side by side in the design.

At the edge of this natural area, the desire to return to nature as a way of life seemed highly fitting. A connection with the surroundings was established by elevating the main living floor half a level above the ground and incorporating extensive glass surfaces to create stunning views. However, perhaps even more important than the outward view was the inward privacy: thanks to the elevated position and the planting of adjacent terraces, no one can see inside—even if you happen to walk to the kitchen undressed.

The lower level—partially embedded into the ground—features far more walls than glass, offering privacy for the bedrooms, sauna, and sunken garden. From this basement level, you can walk unseen straight into nature and the adjacent foraging forest.

The exterior walls were finished with a deep, Defender-colored dark green stucco, allowing the residence to literally blend into its surroundings. The square roof is positioned at an angle to the structure, and the numerous skylights allow beautiful natural light to penetrate—even reaching the heart of the basement through walkable glass. Solar panels complete the sustainable character of this home.
