An intense collaboration between the architect and the structural engineer was essential in creating the cantilevered floors that give this home its distinctive appearance. While the hyperbolic paraboloid roof is visually striking, its realization was surprisingly straightforward due to its logical and symmetrical design. In terms of sustainability, the large overhangs were utilized to their fullest potential: during spring and autumn, the home allows sunlight to enter, while in summer, it keeps the heat outside.
This villa redefines the concept of a ‘luxury residence.’ Developed in close collaboration with the client, the home is a harmonious composition in which material choices, detailing, and the seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces create an architectural statement. The result is an eye-catching presence in the neighborhood and an iconic landmark in its surroundings.
The client desired more than just a functional home. The residence had to exude both strength and elegance while embracing its surroundings without compromising privacy. The design responds to this challenge by striking the perfect balance between openness and seclusion. Curtains and louvers are present, yet they do not diminish the welcoming character of the home.
Its location at a prominent site within the neighborhood posed unique challenges. However, the mandatory earthen embankments around the property were not seen as a limitation but rather as an opportunity: by designing the living area as a bel étage, the home retains its uninterrupted panoramic views.
The villa consists of a minimalist architectural envelope, where flanking walls and horizontal cantilevers define the composition. Slender vertical elements support the striking wing-shaped roof while simultaneously providing shelter, making the house feel both open and intimate. Whereas many architectural designs stop at the façade, this one extends to the very edge of the property. Carefully placed solitary trees, hedges, and subtle elevation differences create a visually transparent yet private and secure living environment.
The hyperbolic paraboloid roof makes this home truly unique. Concrete, plaster, natural stone, and wooden accents come together in a powerful and timeless composition. The absence of an immediate street-facing context granted full design freedom, allowing the residence to emerge as an architectural benchmark in its environment.
The living area opens toward the east, offering views of the fields, while the southwest-facing side has a more enclosed character. From the street, the house reveals itself gradually: initially appearing as an elongated, solid volume, it soon appears to float above a reflective water feature. The façade, composed of custom-designed concrete blocks, filters sunlight in a playful manner and transforms into a living green wall as climbing plants integrate with the structure.
Robust concrete walls have been applied in three ways: plastered, clad with natural stone, and in raw béton brut form. The rough concrete surfaces were cast in finely sawn wooden molds, leaving behind subtle wood grain and saw marks. This tactile finish gives the home a unique texture and reinforces the connection between interior and exterior.
The roof is a masterpiece of craftsmanship: from above, it forms a perfect square, but in reality, it appears optically lifted at two opposite corners, creating a sculptural dynamism. Its underside is clad with diagonally arranged oak slats, accentuating the undulating form. At the glass facades, the lines flow seamlessly, lending the entire structure an almost floating lightness.
"In the beginning, I cursed the process," the client admits. "Until I realized this wasn’t just any house. I respect Bob for repeatedly returning to the essence of his design. Sometimes flexible, sometimes stubborn, but always true to the concept. The final result? A home that is not only beautiful but also feels just right."
Cleverly designed overhangs provide natural climate control. During spring and autumn, the home maximizes sunlight exposure, while in summer, it keeps excess heat at bay. This allows for compact and efficient mechanical installations. On the flat roofs, solar panels generate sustainable energy in conjunction with an intelligent air conditioning system.
